Hong Kong is in mourning following a fire in an apartment complex in the Tai Po area of Hong Kong on Wednesday, November 26th, at 2:51 PM local time. The fire has claimed hundreds of lives, with 279 people missing. Among the missing are 140 Indonesian citizens (WNI), who are Indonesian migrant workers (BMI). It is reported that 9 have died, 2 survived, and approximately 80 are injured and receiving treatment at local hospitals.
All firefighters have been deployed to both extinguish the fire and reach those trapped inside after the fire raged for over 24 hours. On Thursday morning, November 27th, officials stated that they had controlled the fire in four buildings, but firefighters were still working to extinguish the fire in three other buildings for more than 16 hours.
According to various Hong Kong authorities in a press conference, the death toll has risen from an initial four to 13. Additionally, 15 people have been injured. This number could increase, considering many victims have not yet been accounted for. Chou Wing-yin, an official from the Fire Services Department, stated that nine people died at the scene of the fire. Subsequently, six others sustained serious injuries and were immediately taken to the hospital. A total of 767 firefighters were deployed to the location. According to BBC monitoring, thick smoke could be smelled from Tai Po train station, which is about 500 meters from the fire.
At the scene, many residents were visibly concerned as they watched the burning buildings. Fire trucks were parked all along the streets due to the numerous apartment blocks in the densely populated residential complex in Hong Kong. The massive blaze is believed to have originated from a cigarette butt, creating sparks and igniting the abundant bamboo scaffolding used as construction support. The fire engulfed the bamboo scaffolding attached to at least three apartment blocks in Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, a district in the northern part of Hong Kong, before spreading to other parts of the residential buildings.
The exact cause is still under intensive investigation by relevant authorities. In addition to the loss of life, material losses are also significant, given that the apartment is located in the city center. Currently, all health and security facilities continue to stand by to provide services and information related to the fire victims.
